市松さん（いちまさん）の話
The story of Ichimatsu (Ichima) dolls
市松人形は、上方ではいちまさんと呼ばれ、親しまれております。今でこそほとんどのいちまさんは正装の女の子の姿だと思われていますが、明治以前、市松人形は男の子の姿でした。
市松人形の「市松」は寛保年間、徳川吉宗のころ、上方で歌舞伎の若衆として一世を風靡した佐野川市松の似顔人形が市松寄合の贔屓（佐野川市松の、いまでいうファンクラブ）に向けて売り出され、人気を呼び、通称になったといわれています。当時の流行は、歌舞伎役者、遊女から発信されることが、往々にしてありました。佐野川市松が着用した霰、石畳、碁盤模様も市松好みの柄としてもてはやされ、名称も「市松」として衆知のものとなりました。いまでは佐野川市松の名跡を継ぐ役者はいませんが、市松の名前は人形に、紋様にと伝えられています。
市松は四十一歳で亡くなり、その辞世の句は、
寒菊や花に日なたの力なき――盛府（市松の俳号） というものでした。
いちまさんは裸人形とも呼ばれ、式亭三馬の『浮世風呂』に、年のころは十一、二の、丸という女の子が、「わたしはネ、人形の衣（読み：べべ）を二ツ縫いました」とあります。縫物が必修であるため、人形の着せ替えにお針の上達と楽しみを持たせたのでしょう。明治以降も昭和の半ばまで裸のいちまさんが人形点に並んでおりました。また、贅を凝らしたあつらえの四季の衣装を持つ男女のいちまさんも作られておりましたし、戦前は嫁入り道具の一つに定紋入りの男女のいちまさんも好まれました。いづれにせよ、かつて、いちまさんや裸人形は衣装を着せ替えて遊ぶ、現代のように飾って仰ぎ見るものではない、女の子の楽しいままごとだったのです。

Ichimatsu dolls are commonly known as “Ichima-san” in Kyoto-Osaka area. Now most of Ichimatsu dolls are considered as girls in formal dress. However, before Meiji period Ichimatsu dolls were seen in boys’ costumes. The name “Ichimatsu” originally come from a guy called Sanokawa Ichimatsu who was a kabuki actor in times of Kanpo (1741-1744). Dolls with the face of Sanokawa were sold to his fan and became popular afterwards. It was not rare that kabuki actors and prostitutes would set fashion and popularity at that time. The pattern of his costumes became popular as well and it came to be known as “Ichimatsu gara (pattern) ”. Sanokawa died at the age of 41 and had nobody to take over his job; however, his presence still exists in Ichimatsu dolls and the pattern “Ichimatsu gara”.
Ichimatsu dolls are also called naked dolls and young girls (at the age of 11-12) used to enjoy sewing its clothes. As sewing was a compulsory subject at school, girls would enjoy sewing clothes for Ichimatsu dolls. Even after Meiji period, Ichimatsu dolls were sold naked at dolls store until the middle of Showa period. A variety of seasonal clothes were sold and Ichimatsu dolls were one of the most popular household articles for brides. To sum up, Ichimatsu dolls used to play a role as dress-up doll, not just made for ornamental purpose like today.
